It all started with a promise I made during my SOL summer 3 years ago: "yes I will visit you in Belgium one day!"
I still remember being a SOL (student orientation leader) that summer. It's crazy to think that 3 years have already passed. It was during the International student Orientation at UC that I first met Frederick and Benoit. I saw them at lunch in the dining hall and decided to sit and talk to them. Best decision ever. The two were amazing and we had such great time hanging out back in Cincinnati. And then last week I got to visit Frederick in Belgium, the land of great comics and even greater food. Frederick being the most awesome host that he is took me to visit Brussels, Gent, Roeselare and Brugge. He also fed me well. Too well indeed... Such a shame I didn't get to see Benoit. But hey, there's more reason to come back to Europe in the future.
One of the highlights of the trip was the visit to the Comic strips museum. I nearly died out of happiness. I saw Tintin, Smurf, Spirou, Lucky Luke.. THAT WAS MY CHILDHOOD. Every drawing was screaming out my name, and I screamed back in my mind. They were the reasons why I started drawing. They shaped me into who I am today. They are my passions. When I was younger I wanted to become a comic artist in the future. What happened to that dream?... Can I go back now?
Anyway, loved Belgium. Such a beautiful country with beautiful people. And the food. Oh my god the food was heaven: waffles, chocolate, beer, wine, candy, fries with mayonnaise... The four cities I got to visit were very different and lovely in their own way. Brussels had more of a Parisian vibe; Gent the city of light at night; Roeselare a calm little town; and Brugge one of the loveliest old towns I've ever visited. Here are some pictures :) (sorry there are a lot more than usual. but that's because everything was so beautiful!)
Also, for a long time already, I felt completely at peace, traveling on the train from Roeselare to Brussels alone, then walking on the streets at Brussels on my own. It is definitely nice to have a travel partner, but sometimes, you need to travel by yourself. You see things and explore things with a different attitude.
Til next time,
Bisous,
Anh
